Microbiota of the Gut: Antibiotic-Induced Dysbiosis and the Adverse Effects on Human Health

A healthy gut microbial community is essential for homeostasis in mammals. A symbiotic relationship between host and microbe is essential in developing the immune system, providing biomolecules and generating energy through utilisation of indigestible compounds. The diversity of the gut microbiota is altered following antibiotic treatments, the effect this has on the health and wellbeing of the host has long been underestimated and is now the subject of intense debate. Antibiotics facilitate the selection of energy harvesting microbes within the gut and hence heavily influence the gaining of weight and may be contributing more than we anticipated to the modern obesity epidemic. These changes to the bacterial composition of the gut, dysbiosis are caused by elevated oxygen levels within the gut that promotes the propagation of facultative anaerobic Proteobacteria, a condition associated with inflammation and cancer.Additionally, the altered oxygenated intestinal climate allows the growth of aerobic pathogens, conveying clinically relevant resistance genes on highly transmissible mobile elements between communities or acquiring them from commensal bacteria, in turn aiding the spread of antibiotic resistance. Here we discuss the indirect pleotropic effects antibiotics have on the microbial community and environment of the gut leading to hidden adverse implications to human health.

Using Quick Response Code in Food Packaging for Traceability and Marketing Strategies

Global Journal of Nutrition & Food Science (GJNFS)

The use of Quick Response Code (QR code) in agri-food products packaging has been providing a new channel of communication and relationship between company and consumer. In food retailing, in the absence of sellers packs communicate with consumers and, when used as a marketing strategy or tool facilitating traceability, can help consumers interpret the available information on the labels. The mobile tagging strategies allow available information and entertainment with innovative actions to different segments, expanding the labels communications capabilities beyond traditional information weight, validity, and nutritional data. Although the growth potential of this technology is significant, use the packaging still limited, and companies lose the opportunity to differentiate the offer, providing additional content and sometimes customized. However, to leverage its use is necessary for companies to show clearly the QR code on packaging and also indicate to consumers how to make use of this technology, taking advantage of the available information so that in future they may use them in the decision shopping process.

A Study on Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals from a Gender Equality Perspective

Global Journal of Nutrition & Food Science (GJNFS)

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a landmark agreement negotiated and approved by the 193 Member States of the United Nations. Comprised of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 169 targets and 232 indicators, it aims to address the economic, social, environmental and political dimensions of sustainable development in a comprehensive and integrated way. The SDG Agenda is clear that achieving gender equality is not only an important goal in and of itself but also a catalyst for achieving a sustainable future for all. Progress on gender equality has been highly uneven across the different dimensions of the 2030 Agenda. In some areas, such as girls’ access to education, global improvement is undeniable yet insufficient, often leaving behind women and girls in the poorest households (SDG 4). In areas such as labor force participation (SDG 8) and innovation and knowledge creation (SDG 9), significant gender gaps remain, and progress has been minimal. In other cases, such as maternal mortality (SDG 3), progress is too slow and uneven to achieve SDG Target 3.1 by 2030. Similarly, while progress has been made towards eliminating the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) (SDG 5), this is not enough to keep up with population growth, meaning the number of women and girls undergoing FGM is likely to rise over the next 15 years. Unless progress on gender equality is accelerated, the global community will not only fail to achieve SDG 5, it will also forgo the catalytic effect that gender equality can have for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda more broadly. This paper shows that across countries and regions, women and girls face tremendous structural barriers that impact all aspects of their lives. Eliminating gender-specific constraints, as well as other forms of discrimination with which they intersect, is hence critical.
